September goose hunting
comes to Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
The Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is extending the waterfowl hunting program to include the state's September goose season. Goose hunting will operate in the same manner as the regular waterfowl season. Hunting will only be allowed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from September 1 through September 25, and will take place from designated hunt stands.
To participate, hunters must be at the Waterfowl Check Station on Route 77 by 6 a.m. to draw for hunt stand permits for each hunt day. There will be no reserved days this year. Hunting will end at noon each hunt day and all hunters must be checked out by 1 p.m. The permit fee is $10 on Saturdays and $5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Up to three people may share a permit.
In addition to possessing a valid 2000-2001 hunting license, hunters must have a valid 2001-2002 Duck Stamp and new H.I.P. (Harvest Information Program) number. Also, hunters must have successfully completed a state sanctioned waterfowl identification class to be eligible for a refuge permit.
