Reverend Dr. James E. Bence, former Spencerport pastor

James Bence died July 29, 2001 after a short illness at the age of 84. He resided in Haskinville (Steuben County), NY during retirement. He established Spencerport Wesleyan Church on Nicholas Street. He also established Penfield Wesleyan Church and pastored other Wesleyan Churches in Gates, Corning, Buena Vista, West Jasper and Haskinville. For twelve years he served as the Wesleyan Church's Central New York District Superintendent.

Pastor Bence was predeceased by his wife, Florence, in July 2000 and by two sons, Frederick and James L. Bence. Surviving are his five daughters, Rachel Connell of Shortsville, Priscilla Andrews of Dundee, Norma Grover of Gates, Alice Davidson of Otego and Evelyn of Arlington, VA; two sons, Clarence (Bud) of Marion, IN, and Philip of Seattle, WA; and four sisters of Indiana County, PA.

A funeral service was held August 1 at the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church, Canisteo, NY. Friends wishing to remember Pastor Bence are asked to consider a memorial to Houghton College Scholarship Fund or to Chambers Wesleyan Camp, c/o Dorothy Jones, 8789 Isaman Road, Arkport, NY 14809.


ALBION

•Borkowski, Leon "Leo," 84, August 11, 2001 at the Medina Memorial Hospital. Mr. Borkowski was the son of the late John (Martha Kaminski) Borkowski. He was born in Albion in October 1916 and resided there his entire life.

He retired from the teamsters as a construction worker and later he worked in the Buildings and Grounds Department of the Albion Central School.

Mr. Borkowski was a veteran of WWII serving four years in the European Theatre in France and Germany. He was a member of St. Mary's Church and the St. Mary's Athletic Club and the Holy Name Society.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lottie (Sulimonicz) and his stepchildren, Mary (Mark) Hackett of Batavia, Francis (Joann) Skop of Fairport and Dianne (Stephen) Saunders of Pittsford. Also surviving are five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister, Louise Button of Albion.

A Mass of Christian Burial was said August 15 at St. Mary's Church in Albion. Interment Saint Cecelia Cemetery in Oakfield.


BERGEN

•Ely, David Arthur, Saturday, August 11, 2001 at age 41, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, formerly of Bergen; son of Frederick L. (Eunice W.) Ely; husband of Cynthia McLeod Ely; father of Spencer T. and Colton J. Ely; brother of Karen E. Ely and the late Jeffrey Lawrence Ely; grandson of Elizabeth E. Ely and Cordelia B. Wilcox; son-in-law of Harold E. (Jewel H.) McLeod; also survived by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Memorial Service was held August 15 at the Bergen First Presbyterian Church. Memorials can be made to the Byron Rescue Squad, East Main Road, Byron 14422.


•Ely, Jeffrey Lawrence, Saturday, August 11, 2001 at age 37. son of Frederick L. (Eunice W.) Ely; husband of Wanda J. Docteur Ely; father of Alicia M., Megan E. and Tyler Lawrence Ely; brother of Karen E. Ely and the late David Arthur Ely; grandson of Elizabeth E. Ely and Cordelia B. Wilcox; son-in-law of Paul Lawrence (Bonnie L. Wood) Docteur; also survived by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

BROCKPORT

•Richards, Roland J., On August 5, 2001 at the age of 72. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Stephen (Wendi), Thomas (Terri), Linda (Jeff) and Donna (Michael); his mother, Helen Richards; grandchildren, Heather, Lauren, Jocelyn, Sean, Rachel, Nicole and Kyle. Brothers, Byron (Hazel) and Glenn (Cordelia); several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his grandchild, Victoria, and his sister, Janice Richards.

A Memorial Service was held August 11 at the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport. Contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport or the Brockport Clarkson Sweden Joint Recreation Commission Scholarship Fund.


•Sharp, Betty L., On Sunday, August 12, 2001. Survived by daughters, Linda (Charles) Sanford of Brockport and Amy (Gary) Westfall of Clarendon; grandchildren, David (Melissa) Sanford, Matthew Sanford, Emily, Molly and Luke Westfall.

A Memorial Service was held August 16 at the Open Bible Church, Brockport. Donations can be sent to the Jewish Home of Rochester, 2021 Winton Road South, Rochester 14618 in her memory.


CHURCHVILLE

•Fuller, Idelbert E., Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at age 93 following a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arretta W. Fuller; two sons, Bruce I. Fuller and Kenneth R. (Elaine) Fuller; three grandsons; two great grandchildren; his brother, Lloyd (Jean) Fuller of North Chili; his sister-in-law, Mary Y. Fuller of North Chili; several nieces and nephews.

He was a lifelong resident of Churchville, a member of Wardville Lodge #198 I.O.O.F., a lifelong member of Churchville United Methodist Church and was owner operator of Fuller's Greenhouse for over 72 years.

Funeral Services were held August 12 at Churchville United Methodist Church, Churchville. Interment Creekside Cemetery, Churchville.

Contributions can be made to the Memorial Fund of Churchville United Methodist Church or to the Lockport Odd Fellows and Rebekah Nursing Facility in his memory.


CLARKSON

•Case, Marjorie M., August 3, 2001. Predeceased by her husband, Harry Case. Survived by her daughters, Susan Case and Deborah (William) Haines; granddaughter, Sarah Haines; brothers, sister, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held August 12 at Christ View United Methodist Church. Donations can be made to Visiting Nurse Service, 2180 Empire Boulevard, Webster 14580.


HOLLEY

•Layhee, George W., Suddenly on August 8, 2001 at the age of 58. Mr. Layhee was born in 1943 in Rochester and has lived in the area the majority of his life. He worked as a self-employed mechanic. He is survived by his son, Mark (Ann) Layhee of Medina and three daughters, Stardawn Layhee of Rochester, Sulie Layhee of Albion, Cassiopia Layhee also of Albion; six grandchildren; one brother, Charles Layhee of Rochester; three sisters, Delores (Clarence) Robinson, Rosemary Layhee and Margaret Layhee all of Rochester and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held August 13 at the Merrill-Grinnell Funeral Home, Holley. Interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery.


•Marshall, Clifford Rowley, Age 83 died suddenly Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at Lakeside Memorial Hospital. Mr. Marshall was born March 24, 1918 in Barre, the son of Earl and Ethel (Rowley) Marshall. He had farmed for many years on the Miller Road in Barre and then moved to Holley in 1971. He retired in 1983 from Kodak Park, Building #321, Utilities, Steam and Electric Department; was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge of Albion.

He was predeceased by his sister, Grace Marshall Parker. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marion Louise Babcock, who he married December 18, 1944 in Albion. He is also survived by two daughters, Ethel (Berny) Sands of McKensie, Tennessee, Linda (Stefan Jr.) Kessel of Hamlin; two sons, Clifford (Cathy) Marshall Jr. of Hamlin, Richard (MaryAnn) Marshall of Corfu; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchidlren; brothers-in-law, George (Marion) Babcock of Edgewater, Florida, Homer (Clara) Babcock of Albion, Howard Babcock of Lowville; sisters-in-law, Helen Cole of Brockport, Althea (Leon Jr.) Grasby of Fairport and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services were held August 11 at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home, Inc., Holley. Interment, Mt. Albion Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Mary Cariola Children's Center, 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Suite 100, Rochester, NY 14620, Hospice of Orleans County, Lakeside Memorial Hospital or the organization of one's choice.


•Penna, Donald V., Age 62, August 10, 2001. Predeceased by brother, Jerome and sister, Madlyn. Survived by his wife of 40 years, Nancy; sons, Donald A. Penna, Joseph L. (Lisa) Penna, both of Holley; eight grandchildren; brothers, John (Mae) Penna, Matthew (Charlene) Penna; sisters, Carolyn (Richard) Nenni, Kathleen (Frank) Gifaldi, Joanne (Richard) Aldrich, all of Holley and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was said August 13 at St. Mary's Church. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Holley Emergency Squad.


SPENCERPORT

•Helfrich, Alice, Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at age 68. She was predeceased by her husband, Leland "Red" Helfrich. She is survived by three sons, Raymond Helfrich, Tracy (Sue) Helfrich and Robert (Has Ja) Helfrich; her daughter, Terri (Frederick) Ferguson; six grandchildren and a great granddaughter, Arianna; one brother, Richard Stafford; sister Florence Miller, several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held August 13 at Walker Brothers Company Funeral Home, Inc., Spencerport. Interment Fairfield Cemetery, Spencerport. Contributions can be made to Hospice of Genesee County in her memory.


•Utter, Richard A., Monday, August 13, 2001 at age 77. He is survived by two sons, David (fiancee Mary Lou Stack) Utter and Greg (Diane) Utter; two grandchildren, Richard and Jaime; his sister, Betty Ann (Colby) Dill of Maine; several nieces and nephews. He was a retiree of General Motors Corp. and was a member of Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post #330 and Etolian Lodge #479 F.&A.M.

A Memorial Service was held August 18 at Spencerport United Methodist Church, Spencerport. Interment at the convenience of the family. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.
