Volunteers need to clean beaches
The 15th Annual New York State Beach Cleanup, a part of the International Coastal Cleanup of The Ocean Conservancy, will be held on September 15 and 16.
Thousands of volunteers from local environmental groups, schools, youth groups, civic organizations, dive clubs, corporate entities, government agencies and the general public are expected to help clean beaches and document what litters the shores; compile data to devise strategies to combat pollution; increase public participation in solving the problem of pollution; and increase public awareness and appreciation of the environment.
To volunteer call the Beach Cleanup Hotline at 1-800-449-0790.
The beach captain for Greece and Hamlin beaches is Maureen Gagnon, 722-2672. Beach Captain for Orleans County beaches is Jesse Evans, 589-5959.
