Brockport citizens invited to police academy
Brockport residents interested in learning more about the criminal justice system are invited to attend a Citizens Police Academy on Thursday evenings, October 4 through November 29, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. A joint program of the Brockport Village Police Department and the Brockport State University Police, the academy will be held on the SUNY Brockport campus.
Instructors will include officers from the two police departments, members of the Monroe County Public Safety Training Center and District Attorney's Office, members of the SUNY Brockport Criminal Justice Department, and other officers from specialized agencies.
The last Brockport Citizens Police Academy scheduled for spring 2001 was cancelled due to lack of interest, but the previous academy had been well attended. At that session, both village residents and SUNY Brockport students participated.
Some of the topics of discussion will include criminal investigations, the criminal court system, the college judicial system, community policing, diversity, and personal safety.
The main goal of the academy is to improve the relationship between police agencies and the public through greater understanding of the policies and procedures of the legal system.
Applications to attend the free academy are available at the Village Hall, State Street; Brockport Police Department, Clinton Street; University Police Department, Lathrop Hall; and Brockport Student Government Office, Seymour College Union. Applications must be filed by September 24. For more information about the program, contact Acting Brockport Chief Doug Ziegler at 637-1011 or SUNY Brockport Chief Robert Kehoe at 395-2226.
