Spartans and Rangers advance
The Gates Chili Spartans and Spencerport Rangers boys soccer teams advanced to the finals of the Broadbent/Selander Tournament September 14-15.
The Spartans were led by All-Greater Rochester pick Peter Savidis' two goals and one assist effort along with all Monroe County selection Victor Ianni's two assists in a 3-1 victory over Brockport in the first round. Brockport senior Dan Holding spoiled the shutout bid at the 50:39 mark on a long free kick from inside midfield, which deflected off a defender and past the goalkeeper.
In the other first round game, the Rangers blanked Churchville-Chili 3-0. Dahn Walrath opened the scoring as he rushed down the left wing. His crossing attempt hit a defender and went in the net. With the seconds ticking down in the first hall, senior Chris Tyo put a long throw-in in the box where junior Jeff Poweski hopped on the loose ball to make the score 2-0. In the sixty-seventh minute of the game, freshman Chris Farnsworth crossed a pass into the box from the left wing and junior Brian Anderson one-timed it into the net for the final tally. Alex Kilroy and Mike King split the shutout in net for the Rangers.
On Saturday, Gates Chili kept their number one ranking in Section Five with a 3-1 win in the championship game. Poweski scored for the only Ranger goal of the game. Churchville-Chili and Brockport tied 4-4 in the consolation game. Sophomore Kyle Burghardt scored twice for the Blue Devils while Mike Mertz and Chris Brugger each had a goal and an assist for the Saints.
Prior to the game, Spencerport sixth grader Jake Kwiatowski played "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes following a two-minute silence to mourn those lost in the New York City and Washington, D.C. attacks four days prior.
