Rangers netters win two
The rankings for Section Five boys volleyball aren't out yet, but you can be sure Spencerport will be ranked at or near the top after defeating two strong teams in Brockport and Churchville-Chili within six days.
On September 25, the Rangers had all they could handle with the Blue Devils. Brockport won the first game 25-22, before Spencerport took game two 25-18 and three, 25-22. The Blue Devils' Chris Masiello and Josh Dickson finished off the last two points as Brockport won game four 25-22.
The Rangers ran out to a 4-0 lead in the shortened fifth and deciding game on their way to a 15-11 victory for the match. Justin Waas led the Rangers with 24 kills while Jake Butler had 38 assists and Anthony Andolina chipped in eight digs on defense. The Blue Devils received contributions from virtually everyone led by Josh Dickson's 35 assists, Masiello's 11 kills and Phil St. Amant's 13 digs. Four Blue Devils in all were in double figures in digs.
After the match, Brockport coach Lisa Jackson said, "They're more experienced and I feel we're more athletic and you hope that athletic wins, but not tonight."
On October 1, Saints' coach Jim Mercer expressed similar comments after the Rangers swept Churchville-Chili 25-23, 25-23 and 25-13. "They were one of our biggest challenges, but experience won out. I thought they had more team focus and were not as nervous - more relaxed. There were time when we had six sophomores on the floor, but we get to play them again."
Justin Waas again led the Rangers with 16 kills, many following brother Brandon's passing to setter Butler who had 18 assists and 3 kills of his own. Saints sophomore Chris Shekell led with 25 assists.
