Melissa Kleehammer, a senior at Niagara University, was given the McGowan Award. This is a full academic scholarship for her senior year as a top business student. She has also won the Ockerman Award in business for human resource management. She is the daughter of Joanne and David Kleehammer of Brockport.


A senior at Spencerport High School was named as a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist. Christopher Coon was selected by the staff of The American Legion Boys' State of New York which was held at SUNY Morrisville. Coon was named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist on the basis of academics, school and community involvement.

His father, Craig H. Coon, served with the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam era.


Corinne Wolcott, a junior and visual arts major from Brockport, was among students who received Alumni Association Student Scholarships at the State University of New York at New Paltz on October 6. She was awarded a Merit Scholarship.


The following area resident was named a Chancellor's Scholar at Syracuse University: Jessica Haas, of Brockport, is enrolled in Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Jason A. Rivers has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year. Rivers will report to Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia, for basic training. He is the son of Paul and Kimberly A. Rivers of Rochester.


Air Force Airman 1st Class Shellion Y. Walker has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and customs and received special training in human relations. Walker is the daughter of Sheila Douglas of Rochester. She is a 1999 graduate of Gates Chili High School.
