Beginning November 15, the area code for Orleans, Genesee, Monroe and Wyoming counties will change from 716 to 585. Parts of Livingston, Ontario, Yates, Steuben and Allegany counties will also be affected.

The decision to split off part of the 716 territory (the Buffalo area retains 716) came as the area code neared maximum capacity.

Callers should start using the 585 area code on November 15. However, a grace period will be in effect until August 17, 2002. Calls made with the 716 prefix will still be connected correctly until that date. Starting August 17, 2002, incorrect 716 dialers will hear a message telling them to hang up and redial with the 585 code.

Directory Assistance will not be affected by the change, and according to phone companies, current rates will still apply. For more information call 1-800-322-3558.
