Brockport selects new police chief
The Village of Brockport has selected Irondequoit Police Department Lieutenant Daniel P. Varrenti to be the next Brockport police chief. Varrenti, 44, will become Brockports chief on January 1.
The appointment is provisional; Varrenti must successfully complete the police chief civil service examination to be given in March.
Varrenti began his career in Irondequoit in 1985 as a patrol officer. He has also served as commander of Monroe Countys Multi-Agency Drug Task Force since 1991.
Varrenti replaces former Police Chief Gary Zimmer who retired in June following a controversial adminstrative leave of absence. Sergeant Doug Ziegler has been serving as acting police chief.
In other business from the November 5 village board meeting: Jackie Morris, of 45 Maxon Street, was appointed village historian. Morris has lived in the village for over 56 years and has been a member of the museum committee. She replaces William Andrews who resigned last summer.
Superintendent of Public Works Fred Perrine reported that the Main Street renovation project has begun. Underground electric work and curbing replacement are underway. Brick work and sidewalk replacement will be done in the spring.
Acting Police Chief Doug Ziegler reported that the police department is investigating a suspicious death at 140 Park Avenue. In an unrelated case, Brockport police officers arrested three men following the firing of shots near College Street.
