Saints advance to finals
Trailing 1-0 at half-time, the Churchville-Chili Saints girl's soccer team scored three times in the final 30 minutes to pull out a 3-1 win over Canandaigua in the Class A Sectional semi-final October 30.
"We knew we played poorly in the first half, but we weren't going to let this one slip away," said Joanna Patalano after the game. Her goal on a high, arcing shot from 35 yards out seemed to wake the second-seeded Saints out of their first half slumber. The seniors took over from there with Katie Lamica taking a touch pass from Mandy Hayes and putting a shot just under the crossbar for what proved to be the game winning goal with 16:40 left to play. Hayes scored an insurance goal late with an assist from Sarah Begley.
The Saints were held to just five shots in the first half, but exploded for 17 in the second half while allowing Canandaigua just five in the final half of the game. Goalkeeper Chelsea Rehman made 10 saves for Churchville-Chili.
"Two years ago, we lost to Greece Athena in the finals and last year we got knocked out in the semis," said Hayes after the game. "We picked it up in the second half to get back to the final again." The Saints lost 3-1 to Mercy in the Class A final on November 3.
