Voorheis honored

Spencerport's Bernie Voorheis, a fiery competitor with lots of basketball savvy in the 1930s and early 40s, was honored at an Oldtimer's Sports Association reunion September 30, at the Whittier Party House.

Voorheis, 80, was performing for Doc Herring's Rochester Atlas team and caught the eye of the late Les Harrison of the Rochester Royals NBA championship club and was signed to play with them in 1946. Harrison liked Voorheis with his lightning speed and the way he handled the ball.

Voorheis was born on Hubbell Road and started playing in a large barn his father built in Ogden when he was nine years old. He graduated from Churchville-Chili High School.

He remembers some great Spencerport players in the 1930s. The team lost to Cuba High in the 1940 sectional game by a point. Cuba was coached by Ike Kincaid of Spencerport who had two brothers, Zeke and Art, who played most all sports. They formed a team, the Spencerport Town Club, with Cap Kenyon and John Lenhart and coach Dip Murray. The team set some records in those days. All are deceased now.
