GCC to offer distance education degree program
Genesee Community College's Board of Trustees has approved the college's first degree program - General Studies - which students can complete predominantly through distance education. The new degree program is similar to the college's existing General Studies program, except that is based on distance learning, including telecourses and online courses. The board's action means that the college can now submit the new program to the State University of New York for approval. Following SUNY approval, the proposal will be submitted to the New York State Education Department for final approval. The college hopes to officially implement the program in August 2002.
Distance education gives students the opportunity to complete their studies using a combination of textbooks, study guides, video, online instruction, online discussion groups, and close telephone or e-mail contact with faculty members. Course content is identical to classroom-based material, but students have the responsibility of mastering the material through their own study. The program is ideal for individuals with work and family responsibilities, and who cannot meet the demands of a fixed classroom schedule. It is also appropriate for students living outside of the area who, nevertheless, wish to receive a Genesee Community College degree.
The college's General Studies program focuses on the liberal arts. Students are exposed to a wide variety of subject matter, and they receive a grounding in the traditional range of academic disciplines. Students in the 62-credit General Studies program complete 44 credit hours in general education, including the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, natural sciences, and health or physical education. An additional 15 credit hours in program electives provide students with a foundation for upper-division study in selected major. Graduating students receive an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree.
