Kendall students win Liberty Day Essay Contest
Three Kendall High School juniors won the "Liberty Day" Essay Contest for high school students. Christy Fessler received first place, Sheena Maynard second and Heather Meisch third, according to Kendall district officials.
The Liberty Day Program, sponsored by the Lions Club, strives to increase students' awareness of the importance of the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States. Since the U.S. Postal Service is issuing a commemorative stamp on James Madison, the Lions Club decided that the topic of this year's essay contest would be "James Madison: the Father of Liberty." Madison, fourth president of the United States, is often called the "Father of the Constitution" for his role at the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Madison was also a key person involved in the ratification of the Constitution and the writing of the Bill of Rights.
Christy, Sheena and Heather received certificates from U.S. Representative Louise Slaughter, as well as U.S. Savings Bonds from the Lions Club.
