Hilton Model United
Nations attracts 600
More than 600 students from central and western New York converged on Hilton High School last week for the 22nd annual Hilton Model United Nations. Churchville-Chili students, from right, Rachel Sucese and Sarah Leonard consult with their school's advisor, Kathleen Hysick on a question of protcol and strategy. Both are first-year delegates to the conference which simulates authentic U.N rules of order and presentation of resolutions before the General Assembly, Security Council and Special Committees. Meghan Hawley, Secretary General from Athena High School, commented in her opening address: "Students here today care about what's going on in the world ... How important is the U.N.? The U.N. takes conflict and turns it into solutions." Students also participated in a survey of their reaction to U.S. policy after the September 11 attacks. Those results will be shared in March at the United Nations Association of Rochester Model U.N. conference according to Hilton MUN advisor Robert Phillips, teacher at Hilton's Merton Williams Middle School. President of the Hilton MUN Club is John Ayers.
