Brockport welcomes
new historian

The new keeper of Brockport's history is long-time resident Jacqueline Morris.

Morris said she spent a couple of months mulling over the decision to accept the position once she was asked.

"Bill (Andrews, the former historian) was very good ... he got a lot of places in Brockport put on the historic register," she said. "He is a hard act to follow."

Having a good memory of past events was one of the criteria of becoming historian, Morris said. She is also learning how to access the information she doesn't remember.

"There are archives and bound books of the village's history," she said.

Morris said Brockport, as a young growing village, had a lot of industry that has long since disappeared. She said at one time there were two telephone companies - one for residential phones and one for business; an electric company and several manufacturing retail businesses.

Mayor Josephine Matela said Morris was a perfect candidate for the position. "Jackie is very dedicated to her community ... she cares about the people and to preserving our history," Matela said. "She is a welcome addition to our village organization."

As for the future of Brockport, Morris said the village is pulling back together and everyone seems to be more involved in the community. She cited the recent Candlelight Walk, which drew more than 1,000 people as an example of the community spirit.

In her past month as the new historian, Morris said several people who were considering buying homes in the village came to her to seek her expertise in the history of the homes.

"I will also be speaking to the fourth graders soon and telling them about our history," she said.

Mrs. Morris lives on Maxon Street with her husband, Raymond. She is the president of the Morgan Manning House's Antiques Group and was past president of the Garden Club and has also been a member of the museum committee.
