Brockport receives transition grant
for special education students
Brockport High School has received a $4,000 mini-grant from the Rochester Regional Transition Coordination Site that will be used to promote transition services for students with disabilities. "The grant will help our functional living skills class get out into the community to practice and see examples of the social, positive behavior and daily living skills they've learned in the classroom - skills that are essential to their success in a work environment," said Sandra Rohr, transition coordinator at Brockport High School. The grant will cover transportation and associated costs for the trips, which will begin at the end of January and run through June.
Rohr, along with Cheryl Magee, functional living skills teacher, and Rosemary Johnson, school psychologist, applied for the grant. According to Rohr, the grant will help special education students meet state learning standards. "The state requires that students be given the opportunity to demonstrate learned skills across varied environments in real situations," she said.
"We hope to help students make links in their community that will help them in the future when they leave school," Rohr added.
