Mason, Rossignolo lead saints
Kyle Mason scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third period, and Jeremy Rossignolo made 42 saves in net as the Churchville-Chili Saints won their first hockey game of the season 3-2 over Spencerport January 3.
After Chris Mark put the Rangers ahead 1-0 in the first period, Mason scored the first of his two goals off a feed from Paul Marfione. Following a scoreless second period, the Saints made it 2-1 when Mike Lima scored just 21 seconds into the third period with Mason and Marfione assisting.
On the game-winning goal, Mason received a pass from Lima, skated around the defense and found the top corner off a sharp angle giving the Saints a 3-1 lead. With a little over two minutes left in regulation, Joe Mulhern scored for the Rangers who then pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker in the final minute. Rossignolo was equal to the task making 17 saves in the third period giving the Saints the win.
Rossignolo, making just his fourth start of the season, was mobbed by his teammates on the ice after the final horn. "I was just glad I was in the right position most of the game and we could finally get a win. Getting the two-goal lead in the third period took some of the pressure off." The 45 shots allowed by the Saints marked a season high.
Head coach Jim Jackson managed a smile after the game, "I'm proud of the way the team stuck together. It took everybody tonight and maybe this will start the ball rolling own the other side of the hill."
Churchville-Chili next plays Penfield January 16 while the Rangers have off until January 18 when they battle Pittsford.
