Jones' hat trick leads Brockport
Junior defenseman Colby Jones recorded his second hat trick of the season to lead the Brockport Blue Devils to an 8-1 victory over Spencerport in high school hockey January 12.
Jones scored twice in the first period and sandwiched goals by Matt Sweeting and Jimmy Baker to stake the Blue Devils to a 4-0 lead. John Holding scored his first high school goal to start the second period for Brockport and was followed by brother Dan Holding and Jarrod Miner, giving the Blue Devils a 7-0 lead after two periods. Jones completed his hat trick in the third before Spencerport captain Joe Gionta broke up Nick Unger's shutout bid with just 1:31 remaining in the game with assist from Jeff Poweski and Mike DiRoma.
Craig Willis assisted on four of Brockport's goals while Brandon Dries and Rick Napierala each had two assists. Unger made 12 saves in net to pick up the win. Brockport outshot the Rangers 30-13 in the game.
The Blue Devils enter the final three weeks of the regular season in first place in the White Division. They travel to participate in the Ogdensburg Tournament January 25-26 and don't have a division game until January 30 when they battle rival Irondequoit. The Rangers are off until facing Brighton January 30.
