February Concert
For their winter concert, the Roberts Wesleyan College-Community Orchestra will present music of homage to Scotland. On Friday, February 1, music director Nyela Basney will conduct the RWCCO as they play Mendelssohn's "Scottish Symphony."
In the pre-concert lecture, which is at 6:45 p.m. in Shewan Recital Hall, the Rochester folk musician Mitzie Collins will address the distinctive qualities of Scottish music. She is a graduate of Eastman School of Music and is considered a leader of the hammered dulcimer revival in the United States. Assisting her will be Hazel Stewart, a native of Scotland, who will play slow airs on her great grandfather's restored fiddle. She won the Northeastern U.S. Scottish fiddle championship in 1984 and appears in concerts with the Rochester Scottish Pipe Band. This is Hazel's 13th year with the RWCCO.
During intermission, Robert Dowd will present a medley of tunes on his highland bagpipe. He will be wearing the traditional highland dress in civilian style featuring a specially tailored jacket and Royal Stewart kilt. Dowd began his study of the bagpipe as he started teaching music in the Gates Chili School District. Now retired, he has played the violin for ten years with the RWCCO and is on a leave of absence with the Rochester Pipe Band.
The RWCCO concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Hale Auditorium in the Roberts Cultural Life Center. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the Box Office in the RCLC. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Those concert-goers who wear a kilt or a tam o'shanter will receive a free ticket to the next concert which is the Celebrity Pops Concert on March 15.
