RPO music appreciation evenings
scheduled at SUNY Brockport
SUNY College at Brockport School of Arts and Performance and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will again collaborate on lectures/demonstrations hosted by Andrea Dawson, RPO violinist and instructor of the course, Music Appreciation with the RPO. Dawson will host the series throughout the spring. Included will be presentations by several RPO musicians. All lecture demonstrations are Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. (note exception-February 18 at 8 p.m.) in Room 120 of the Tower Fine Arts Center, Holley Street. Reservations and tickets are not required.
- February 18: Drummer's Delight - Principal Percussionist Jim Tiller will discuss the complexities involved in being a percussionist in an orchestra and the differences between the role of the percussionist and that of other musicians. Tiller's demonstrations are always full of surprises and he offers those in attendance a chance to try a variety of percussion instruments. (Lecture begins at 8 p.m.)
- March 4: Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Woodwind Quintet: Orchestral Colors - The Wind Section - Principal flutist Rebecca Gilbert, oboist Anna Hendrickson, clarinetist Robert DiLutis, bassoonist Charles Bailey, and Dietrich Hemann on French horn will share their insights into how this variety of timbres works together.
- March 25: High Strung? The Violin as the Heart of the Orchestra - Andrea Dawson, a member of the RPO for six years, will reveal the history of the violin, its role in the development of the orchestra, and some of the "tricks of the trade."
- April 8: The Mello Cello - Bass Power and Soaring Melody, All in One - Principal RPO Cellist since 1988 and Co-director of the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester Stefan Reuss will lead guests through the historic journey of the cello from bass accompaniment to solo instrument.
- April 22: The Versatile Trombone - Megumi Kanda, a Cleveland Institute of Music graduate and recent addition to the RPO, will present the history of the trombone and demonstrate the versatility of this unique instrument that can portray diverse characters, from angelic to bombastic.
