win prize for school
Nancy Armocida's efforts to make good use of food commodities available to schools have yielded a $5,000 award from the state Office of General Services.
The Hilton Food Service Department, under Armocida's direction, won the award based on its creative use of government commodities such as rice, dried fruit, pasta, cheese, ground beef and turkey roasts.
"What we did is suggest that our Home and Careers Food Science classes create recipes using these ingredients," Armocida said. "We asked students to make them adaptable to large-quantity cooking, kid-friendly, and attractive. They came up with two amazing recipes which are on our January menu: Sweet and Sour Turkey which uses turkey, rice and dried cherries and Confetti Salad using dried cranberries, raisins and rice."
"Hilton School District's Food Service Department not only takes the full allotment of commodities from the state, but exceeds our entitlement every month. Because of the creative and innovative use of these foods, Hilton schools have the lowest suburban lunch cost in Monroe County," John Cooper, Hilton Superintendent of Schools, said. "Nancy Armocida, our Food Service Director, has made our menus nutritious, student-friendly and varied for all our students. We're very pleased that her efforts have been recognized by the state Office of General Services."
Armocida has been Food Service Director in the Hilton School District since 1998. She is a graduate of SUNY Buffalo with a degree in nutrition. She is a resident of Greece.
The award is used to purchase food service equipment.
