RPYO and RPO perform joint concert
Continuing a 30-year old Rochester musical tradition, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will join its junior colleagues in the RPYO for its annual joint concert Sunday, March 10 in Eastman Theatre. The two orchestras, under the direction of RPYO Music Director Dr. David Harman, will offer a dramatic musical program, entitled Russian Passion in honor of the two works to be performed jointly on the Eastman stage: the Finale of Tschaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 and the Finale of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.
The annual joint concert highlights the special relationship that has existed since 1970 between the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and its professional sponsor, the RPO, and is a major component of the RPO's educational mission in the Rochester community. The March 10 concert will feature solos by two Rochester area musicians who were winners of the fall 2001-2002 RPYO Concerto Competition, Andrew Henry, violinist, and James Kim, cellist. Andrew Henry, senior at McQuaid Jesuit High School, will perform the first movement of Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Andrew has played violin in the RPYO for three years and is now its Assistant Concertmaster. He currently studies with RPO violinist Boris Zapesochny. Andrew spent last summer with the Chautauqua School of Music Orchestral Program. In addition to being an RPYO Concerto Competition Winner, he was selected for the 2001 NYSSMA Conference All-State Symphony Orchestra and placed second in the Penfield Symphony's 2002 Young Artist Competition.
