Demmans MVP as Blue Devils win
Brockport senior Kim Demmans had 84 assists over the final two rounds and was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player as she led the Brockport Blue Devils to the Monroe County large school championship in girls volleyball.
Down two games to one in the semi-finals against Greece Arcadia, Demmans, thought for a couple of minutes that this might be my last high school game. But, in the fourth game we decided we might as well play hard and we turned it around. The Blue Devils won the last two games of the best-of-five match 30-26 and 15-8 to advance to the finals.
Against Fairport in the finals, Brockport raced to a 30-25 win in the first game, but dropped the second game 30-26. In the third game and tied at 11-11, the Blue Devils went on an 11-4 run to seal a 30-26 victory. Brockport never trailed in the fourth and deciding game, winning 30-25.
Senior Lynn Sorel, who did not have a good game in the semis, rebounded to lead with 16 kills and added 17 digs on defense. I was just nervous on Thursday, but today everyone told me to stay calm because I play better when Im calm. I tried to stay relaxed before the game this time. We lost to Webster the last two years in the finals, so this is a much better way to finish the season.
Chris Arieno, who had 15 kills and 18 digs in the championship game, joined Sorel and Demmans on the All-Tournament team. Jamie Hugelmaier added 18 digs to the strong defensive effort and senior Kristi Rath had 18 digs. Brockport head coach Jennifer Glasheen wins a championship in her first year at the helm for the Blue Devils.
