Repair work
in progress
Crews are at work repairing what the NYS Canal Corp. refers to as "Culvert 54" just west of Adams Basin. According to Division Canal Engineer Dave Martin, there are two culverts which carry Salmon Creek under the Erie Canal. Leaks in the conduit have caused infiltration of canal water into the pipe and sinkholes in the surrounding canal area. Work includes repairing the concrete in the culvert and re-grouting the cement as well as remedial work on the canal bottom in the culvert area. The large pipe on the canal bed at the left side of the photo temporarily diverts canal water from one side of the work area to the other. Project completion is expected by May 1, in plenty of time for the 2002 canal season. Photograph for Westside News Inc. by Walter Horylev.
