Spencerport community invited
to Capital Project groundbreaking
The Spencerport community is invited to a capital project groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, April 6. The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. at the west cafeteria of Spencerport High School. In addition to the groundbreaking, residents will have an opportunity to learn more about the project.
"We are very excited to finally be at this point," says Superintendent Phillip W. Langton. "This project will greatly improve the student learning environment. It will also be a great community asset." The community approved the $46.9 million project in March 2000 after a thorough review of the district's needs by a comprehensive community task force.
The cornerstone of the project is the construction of a new elementary school. It will be the first new school in the district in more than thirty years, and it will ease the space crunch in the district's existing elementary schools. The project also includes a new auditorium and new classrooms at the high school. The new classroom wing includes a technology suite that will allow the district to expand offerings, including courses in information technology, digital electronics and manufacturing technology. "Consider the possibilities," says Gerry Bucklin, principal at the high school.
A new wing at Cosgrove Middle School will provide room for all sixth-graders to attend school there, according to school officials. This move will allow the district to better prepare students for the eighth-grade state assessments in math and English. "I am so excited about the sixth-graders coming to our school," says Principal Bonnie Seaburn. "They are going to add such positive energy and exuberance to our Cosgrove community."
The project also includes a multi-propose field with an all-weather track on the main campus. The soccer stadium and tennis courts will be renovated, and there will be improved spectator parking.
