Labyrinth returns to Spencerport
If you didn't get a chance to travel the labyrinth in October, a return visit is scheduled during Holy Week. Labyrinth will be open at the Spencerport United Methodist Church at 32 Amity Street, Spencerport, on the evenings of March 25 and 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, March 30 from 1 to 3 p.m.
According to church leaders, this peaceful, relaxing prayer path is a journey with stops along the way to help participants focus on aspects of their spiritual journey.
Participants walk the labyrinth carrying a CD player and listening on headphones to music and a soothing voice describing each stop. Experiences incorporate all of the senses: touch, hear, see, smell and taste.
Pastor Keith Griswold descries the labyrinth with words from the leader's guide: "It blends the ancient practice of labyrinth walking with contemporary popular culture - music, televisions, computers, and things from everyday life. This suggests that the holy can be represented in the language of the here and now, of which popular culture is a significant part. God meets us in the stuff of everyday life, in the real world."
Visitors can come and go through the labyrinth at any time during the hours that it is open. It usually takes about one hour to travel the path, and it is designed for adults and teens. The church will be open until 9 p.m.; however, journeys will not begin after 8 p.m.
