Long-time Hamlin resident Vincent Batty died March 3, 2002 in Zephyrhills, Florida. Mr. Batty was a devoted member of the Hamlin Fire Department, starting his volunteer work with the group when he was only 17 and working his way up the ranks to eventually serve as the department’s chief. He also served as second vice president and as president of the Western New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association (WNYVFA) in 1979 and was a member of the Monroe County Firemen’s Association, the Firemen’s Association of New York (FASNY), International Chiefs Association, New York State Association of Fire Chiefs and was instrumental in starting the Hamlin Firemen’s Exempt group.

Born in Hamlin April 22, 1925, Mr. Batty operated a farm and worked in the warehouse at Duffy Mott, as well as on the Town of Hamlin road crew for many years.

Larry Merritt, former Hamlin Supervisor, Hamlin Fire Department and Exempts treasurer and friend of Mr. Batty, said, "Having known Vin since boyhood, it is easy for me to say he was a great promoter and organizer. Several organizations have certainly benefited from his efforts. His death is Hamlin’s loss and also our personal loss."

"Vincent Batty was one of the most dedicated people in the volunteer fire service right up to the time he passed away," said Hamlin Fire Chief Scott Witte. Serving as chief from 1955 to 1959, Vin was very well known in the area and held many offices in county and state organizations. His serving as vice president of the Western New York Firefighters Association led to Hamlin hosting the annual convention. "I’ve known Vin for over 20 years and he was always involved in something having to do with either the fire department or the exempts, such as the carnival or the chicken barbecue, and any and all fund raisers. … His dedication and hard work will be missed by all who were fortunate to know Vincent Batty," Witte said.
