McQuaid Jesuit High School seeks
nominees for higher achievement program
McQuaid Jesuit High School is seeking nominations to its five-week summer Higher Achievement Program (HAP) for students who have completed seventh grade. Nomination forms are available at most public and private junior high schools in the county and city. Public and private school counselors, principals and teachers nominate students for the program. Students selected for HAP must submit their applications to McQuaid before June 7.
The program, which begins July 1 and runs through August 2, provides enrichment to young men entering the eighth grade and who demonstrate leadership qualities and desire a higher level of academic achievement. These students are primarily from families not able to afford special programs. Students attend Monday-Friday, from 8:45 a.m. to 1:50 p.m.
Selection is based on potential for leadership and college-level achievement. Full and partial scholarships are offered; need is the only criterion. Students must provide their own transportation.
Students enrolled in HAP receive individualized attention and enriched curriculum in reading, literature, English and mathematics. HAP also provides a wide range of extracurricular and athletic activities. A day trip is planned and students will visit local colleges and landmarks.
The summer program is followed by four Saturday sessions in the fall to reinforce study habits learned during the summer and to help HAP graduates prepare for the entrance exam administered by Catholic schools.
