SUNY Brockport makes donation to fire department

The Brockport Fire Department is the recipient of a donation from SUNY Brockport’s President Paul Yu.

Yu presented Fire Chief Gregory Wing and members of the department a check for $5,000 at the April 2 monthly department meeting.

The money, Wing said, will be put toward upgrades to computer equipment and other office equipment. "The donation will go towards necessary items to help us better perform our tasks," Wing said. "This is a wonderful gift and one that is definitely needed."

Wing said the department’s relationship with the college through its student government may have been one of the factors in the department receiving the donation. "Donations like this are very welcome because with our department being volunteer, we don’t want to have to burden the taxpayers with attempting to improve and upgrade our equipment," Wing said.

Mayor Josephine Matela echoed the chief’s comments in thanking the college for its donation. "I know the chief will put these funds to good use in his department," she said. "We are extremely grateful for the donation."

Also at the April 2 meeting, Matela performed swearing in duties for officers of the department for the upcoming year.
