Notes from Brockport and Sweden
A monthly look at preserving Brockport/Sweden's heritage ...

April 2002
Anyone who has had the pleasure of a stroll in the last week or so on the canal near the Main Street bridge in Brockport cannot help but note the new benches and landscaping. And, the Brockport Garden Club will be adding some more plantings this spring. Early spring, before leafing out, is a fine time to amble along the path and try to identify any 19th century buildings still intact. Our portion of the canal facelift continues through the ongoing efforts of our Mayor, Josephine Matela and other interested parties. Monies have been advanced to repair the wall between Park and Main and work will be underway soon.

Mayor Matela secured the participation of representatives from the Canal Corporation who met with interested citizens in the Sweden Town Hall on Thursday, April 17 to discuss plans for the canal trail between Adams Basin and Albion. Those who have been out and about on the towpath this spring may have noted that portions are being rerouted and graded, especially the piece near the Gallup Road Bridge where the path empties onto busy Canal Road.

Due out at the end of the month is "Images of America - around Brockport, Sweden and Clarkson" published by Arcadia Publishing Company. Bill Andrews, Eunice Chesnut, Kathy Goetz and Hazel Kleinbach all worked many hours to compile the photographs, many of which are taken from glass plates in the collection at The Brockport Museum. Along the same line ... Bill Andrews bids on and got a large glass advertising sign from the Capen Piano Company, an important early Brockport industry, on E-Bay recently. Concurrently, a rush of excitement was provoked by the offer of a collection of photos and letters of the Seymour family, early Brockport pioneers. There was some heavy bidding by several persons in the Brockport area, among them, Bill Andrews, but he was outbid ... by another Brockporter.
