A biography project bridges the generation gap

The Biographer's Club at the Brockport Hill Elementary School brought together fourth- and fifth-grade writers to work on a special project with senior citizens at the Sweden Senior Center. After six months of hard work, they recently presented the finished product to the seniors, a 70-page book of biographies.

Students visited the senior center every Tuesday to talk with seniors about their lives. They asked the seniors about their childhoods and what school and life were like for them when they were younger. The students took notes, pictures, and tape-recorded each session. They later transcribed their notes and designed a cover for their book.

In addition to the students in Biographer's Club getting answers to their questions, they also got some good advice, like the importance of being honest and listening to their parents. And they were also asked many questions, since the seniors were just as interested in learning about the students' lives. Not only did the students put together a beautiful book of oral histories and learn many new skills, but they formed new friendships.
