Bergen taxes remain stable for third straight year

For the third year in a row, Village of Bergen officials have been able to hold the line on taxes while still continuing with various capital projects and working on sidewalk installation and upgrades.

Mayor Thomas LaSage said he was pleased with the budget process. "We have enough income to cover our expenses and we didn't need to raise taxes to do it," he said. "It was a good process."

For 2002-2003, taxpayers will continue paying $4.95 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Included in the budget were raises for the mayor and trustees. The increases in the annual stipends were approved by board members prior to the recent elections. The mayoral stipend was increased from $4,200 to $6,000; trustees stipends increase from $2,100 to $3,000.
