win at states
Bright Raven gymnasts Jackie VanDeWater of Churchville and Tracy Apeland of Chili were big winners at the USA Gymnastics Level 8 State Championships held in Vestal April 27-28.
VanDeWater, age 17, won the State Championships title in vaulting competition capturing first place among 49 competitors in the 15 and over age division with a high score of 9.425. She competed in all four of the women's events finishing with an all around score of 35.10. Apeland, age 15, placed fifth all around totaling 36.125 and earned medals in each of the individual events. She was fourth in vaulting (9.15), sixth on the uneven parallel bars (8.70), ninth on balance beam (8.90) and eighth in floor exercise (9.375).
Danielle Palumbo of North Chili earned a medal for her performance in vaulting, placing twelfth among 85 competitors in the 13-14 age division with a score of 9.15.
Other Bright Raven Gymnastics USAG Level 8 State Championships qualifiers included Jenna Easton of Churchville, Larissa Bolalek of Greece, Brianna D'Errico of Byron, Kerry Apeland of Chili, Christine Manthei of Churchville, Amber Mascia of Chili, Ashley Roberts of Kent and Kristin Harnischfeger of Irondequoit. As a team, they finished in seventh place.
