Notes from Brockport and Sweden
A monthly look at preserving Brockport/Sweden's heritage
At this month's meeting of the Historic Preservation Committee, there was a lot of discussion about the completion of Taylor & Taylor Associates, Inc.'s "Reconnaissance-Level Cultural Resources Survey" of the Village of Brockport. This survey, as the report states, "is the village-wide investigation of the breadth of historic properties in this historically and architecturally rich and diverse Erie Canal town." The report also includes recommendations on how to further document our historic resources and preserve architectural treasures for the enjoyment of future generations. It is a fascinating report and is available at this time for public view at the Village Hall.
There has been so much written lately about canal revitalization projects. It is very exciting to see such enthusiasm and hard work. Along those lines, I wish to highlight an ongoing project undertaken by Prof. Margaret Blackman of SUNY Brockport's Anthropology Department. The course is entitled "Research Methods in Cultural Anthropology" and seven junior and senior Anthropology majors are documenting heritage sites along the canal. Do you remember the Erie canal, 50, 60 years ago? Buildings along the canal which are gone? Commercial traffic along the canal? Stories about the canal? If you are interested, call Professor Margaret Blackman, 637-7426 (home) or 395-5705 (office).
