State funds earmarked for canal improvements
More than $50 million in state funds will be flowing through the area as part of a five year plan to revitalize the 348 mile stretch of the Erie Canal from Lake Erie to the Hudson River.
Governor George Pataki made the announcement May 9 as part of a canal town tour. "We're in difficult economic times with the New York attack and the recession," he said, addressing the crowd from Spencerport's canal gazebo. "We have to continue to fight for every job, we're adding more empire zones throughout the state and the canal is part of the revitalization."
The Erie Canal, Pataki said, is a center for economic growth in the 21st century. "We want to revitalize the canal to draw in recreation and business travelers."
Bob Brooks, director of the Canal Corporation, said that Pataki's unique vision for the future of the canal is as powerful as DeWitt Clinton's vision was when he began the canal's construction.
Pataki said the millions of dollars that will be available will help canal villages like Spencerport construct informational kiosks, trails, parking and picnic areas. "The money invested will enhance the quality of life for the people who live here."
The first project on the agenda, he said, will begin this summer and will involve 17 miles of canal trail from Adams Basin, through Brockport, Holley and Albion.
Senator George Maziarz said the money pledged will give an opportunity to further enhance Spencerport. "We've already got some things in the works
a Fireman's Museum, a boat launch and a park in Ogden."
