Flag disposal ceremony
Since September 11, 2001, the great symbol of our country, the American Flag is seen displayed everywhere - homes, businesses, cars, windows, etc. We reflect on the flag raising over the years, especially Iwo Jima to our proud firemen at ground zero-World Trade Center. When the flags become torn and tattered, the proper and dignified way to dispose of them is by burning as stated in the Flag Code, amended in the 94th Congress.
Each year the Monroe County American Legion Auxiliary holds a ceremony for the proper disposal of these flags. The site selected this year is the home of County Auxiliary President Pamela Lentine, a dedicated member of Ely Fagan Post 1151, Middle Road, Henrietta, June 9 at 2 p.m.
The ceremony will be conducted by Post Commander Floyd Mecheelson and Post members. Guest speaker will be Ms. Catherine McCabe, Councilwoman of Henrietta. She is current president of Rochester Council of Navy League of U.S. and associate member of Monroe County Chapter #1 Korean War Veterans and member Vietnam Veterans. Other guests include County Commander James Martin, 7th District President Nancy Kurk, County Chaplain Molly Meyer. Ely Fagan Auxiliary will offer prayers. Jennifer Danylyshyn, Junior member of Post 1590-Onufryk and a senior at Fairport High, will sing the National Anthem. Sperry High singers will offer patriotic songs and musicians from the school play Taps. All scouts, Color Guards, Auxiliary and Post members and public are invited to attend. Flags for burning can be dropped off at any Legion Post or the County Legion Headquarters, 933 University Avenue.
