Lifetime of artifact hunting retold in new book

A special event is being planned to present Stanley Vanderlaan's book titled, "Odds And Ends," a documenting of the many years of archeological digs in Orleans County and Western New York.

Vanderlaan is a charter member of Orleans County Historical Association, an Archeological Fellow with the Rochester Museum & Science Center and an Archeological Fellow with the New York State Archeological Association. While woodchuck hunting in 1956, the author found some flint chips and projectile points lying on the top of the ground and thus began his lifetime of "digging." He and his father spent the next 47 years searching for artifacts in fields, along the roads, in building sites, and in all kinds of weather. His book is filled with stories about his adventures, the people he has met while searching for treasures and includes hundreds of pictures.

A summer supper will be served at the Knowlesville Recreation Hall on Thursday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m. Reservations can be made by sending a check made out to OCHA for $6.50 for each supper, to: Sue Baker, 13979 Allen Road, Albion, NY 14411 or call 589-4690 by May 27.

After the supper, Vanderlaan will give a few remarks about his lifetime archeological career, the book and will show some of his collected treasures. Book signing and sale will follow the talk.
