Saints Torcello stops Braves
Churchville-Chilis Nikki Torcello allowed only six hits while striking out seven as the third-seeded Saints defeated Canandaigua 8-1 in the first round of the high school softball Section Five tournament.
Five different players drove in runs for the Saints, who scored in all but one inning in the game. Amy Piatek knocked in the first run of the game in the first inning and was 3-for-4 for the game. Jordan Hawthorne had an RBI groundout to give the Saints a 2-0 lead in the second inning before Krystal Cunningham singled to right field to drive in two more.
Amanda Piatek singled in the third inning to give the Saints a 6-1 lead and Beth Ottley had a two out bases loaded single in the fifth inning for the final run. Canandaigua loaded the bases in the sixth inning but did not score and never threatened in the seventh. Two other runs scored on wild pitches and errors.
Churchville-Chili improved to 13-4 with the win and was set to battle sixth seeded Fairport, who defeated Greece Arcadia, in the second round.
