Young women invited to enter scholarship essay contest
The National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) and the National Rifle Association (NRA) are co-sponsoring their fifth annual essay contest for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors, which this year will be entitled "Freedom and Security in a Dangerous Decade." The contest's seven winners will each receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to NFWL's Annual Conference in mid-November, where they will network with, be mentored by and speak to hundreds of women lawmakers from across the United States.
"This is an excellent opportunity for local members of the Class of 2002 and 2003," said NFWL member, Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester, Chili, Wheatland). "The contest will help seven young women demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of current issues and the U.S. Constitution, ignite their passion for public policy, develop their leadership skills and attend college."
The deadline is September 30, 2002, after which an NFWL selection committee will judge each essay and determine the seven winners. The judges will weigh such factors as original research and analysis, knowledge and understanding of current issues and the United States Constitution, fresh insight, story-telling skills and other expressive and persuasive writing skills.
