Holley students receive citizenship award

Holley fifth-graders Jenny Rae Siplo and Devon Jedamski are this year's recipients of the Catherine B. Press Citizenship Award. The award is given annually to a fifth-grade girl and boy who display some of the same characteristics, such as caring, responsibility and good citizenship, as Catherine B. Press, who was a secretary at Holley Elementary School.

"Jenny has a heart of gold, is sincere, and gives everything her best," said her teacher Sherry Viscardi. "She truly cares about every student and goes out of her way to make her fellow students happy."

"Devon always makes sure he shows compassion and generosity to his peers," said his teacher Jennifer Gibson. "He is an outstanding kid and an exceptional student."

Fifth-grade teachers choose the students they think exemplify good character traits, such as citizenship, respect, responsibility, trust, fairness and caring. Then special area teachers select the students they believe display these characteristics in other areas of the school. The award is based on the teachings of Holley Elementary's character education program.
