Covella leads west All-Stars
Division III Player of the Year, A.J. Covella of Spencerport, leads a group of eleven area players on the West All-Star team for the 20th Annual Eddie Meath football game August 3 at Fauver Stadium, University of Rochester at 7 p.m.
Covella had over 3,300 career passing yards for the Rangers, threw 31 touchdowns and was one of two quarterbacks named. He also was on the All-State team and first team All-Greater Rochester this past season and will attend Gannon University in the fall.
He is joined by teammates Mike Dermody at running back, Jason Brinson at wide receiver and offensive tackle Brandon Pratt. Spencerport native and Aquinas grad Chris Morgan also joins the squad at defensive line. He will start college at Ithaca this fall.
Also named to the west squad was running back Travis Cyrus, who led Churchville-Chili in rushing this past season, defensive lineman Jim Baker and Jeff Lipinczyk from Brockport and defensive lineman John Hennekey and offensive lineman John Boothe from Hilton. Boothe was named first team All-County in football last season and will be a freshman at Alfred University this fall.
Two area cheerleaders were named to the All-Star team and will provide the sideline entertainment--Amanda Sharp of Spencerport and Bonnie Simmons of Churchville-Chili. Simmons won the senior "Tri-Athlete" Award for the Saints this year for her efforts in gymnastics and track as well as cheerleading.
The Eddie Meath game each year marks the final time these seniors and cheerleaders represent their respective high school teams.
