Sweden hears ideas for soon-to-be vacant Ames location

Preliminary feelers have been put out by a couple of parties interested in space in the soon to be vacant Ames store, Sweden officials said last week.

Alan Bader, Sweden's building supervisor, said Staples has expressed a tentative interest in space in the Ames Plaza and there is also talk of another car wash being proposed.

With the closing of the Ames store coming in the next couple weeks as the result of a company-wide bankruptcy filing, there will be ample space available in the plaza on Route 31.

Bader said that Bill Gray's will be opening soon and he heard that more than 40 individuals from the Brockport area had been hired. "Bill Gray's is talking about wanting to do an outdoor patio-type area for next year," he said.

In other matters, the board resolved to:

Endorse the construction of a snow removal equipment storage building at Ledgedale Airpark. Under municipal law, because Big Fella Enterprises, Inc. has received a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to pay for 90 percent of the construction and NYS Department of Transportation has agreed to offer a matching grant to the Federal grant for 50 percent of the non-federal share of the eligible costs, local municipal support is needed for the project in order to obtain the state funding.

By unanimous vote the board members agreed to support the project. The construction has already obtained a declaration from the State Environmental Quality Review act that the construction will have no significant impact on the environment.

Allow the lease of a topsoil screener and conveyor for use by the Highway Department in the Sweden Town Park. It will be leased at a cost of $6,500 per month for a one month duration.

Highway Superintendent Fred Perrine said it costs $90,000 to purchase a new topsoil screener and while there are smaller pieces of equipment for rent, they would take longer to complete the job and would cost the town more money in the long run. "This piece of equipment will get the job done quicker and with the conveyor attached it will be much more efficient," he said.
