Strategic planning process begins

The Spencerport Board of Education has selected Dr. Stephen Barone, president of Transformation Systems, Ltd., to facilitate the district's strategic planning process during the 2002-03 school year, according to a press release prepared by district personnel. Developing a strategic plan is one of the board's major initiatives for the coming year.

To support that goal, Superintendent Phillip W. Langton has scheduled an early release day for students on September 13 so that all district employees can attend a strategic plan presentation. In addition to staff, the district has invited more than a hundred key community members, including village and town officials.

"Strategic planning," says Superintendent Phillip W. Langton," is one of the most important things we will do this year." The entire process will continue throughout the school year and involve a wide range of community members and district employees. "The final product will be based on our community beliefs and values," says Lawrence Fenity, school board president. "This process will set our course for the coming years."

Barone will lead the district through the process that will help the district achieve consensus regarding the long-term future. The process will include a core planning team of about 30 people that will reflect the full range of diversity within the Spencerport staff and community. In addition to racial, gender and age diversity, the district will seek out people with a range of opinions and philosophical viewpoints.

Other staff and community-based groups will design measurement tools and action plans to implement the strategic plan. The plan will be presented to the school board for approval in the spring.

The strategic plan will set the course for the district over the next several years, says Langton. "It will guide all of our major decisions," he says. "The plan will galvanize our community partnerships in meeting the needs of our students," says Fenity.
