Thruway motorists save $8 million in fuel costs
Governor George E. Pataki announced that the 5-cents per gallon reduction in fuel prices put into effect at all Thruway Travel Centers saved motorists more than $8 million in fuel costs over the last two years, according to the latest financial data.
"The unqualified success of this program is great news to everyone who uses the New York State Thruway for their transportation needs," Governor Pataki said. "These fuel savings will continue to benefit millions of Thruway travelers now and in the future, while also encouraging tourism and business growth throughout our great State.
The Thruway's fuel price reduction program, which was first implemented as a pilot program in May 2000, is expected to save Thruway motorists more than $20 million in fuel costs over a five-year period. Through August 2002, the program has already saved motorists more than $8 million in fuel costs.
Under a five-year contract extension negotiated between the Thruway Authority and Mobil and Sunoco corporations, the lower fuel prices will remain in effect through 2005.
