Practice E.D.I.T.H. October 9
Operation E.D.I.T.H. will be held in the Spencerport Fire District on Wednesday, October 9 starting at 6:30 p.m. Firefighters will be in the neighborhoods on firetrucks handing out fire prevention literature on subjects like Operation E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home) and the importance of having a smoke detector on every floor of a home. Firefighters can answer any questions residents have.
Why E.D.I.T.H.?
Most fatal home fires happen between midnight and 8 a.m. when most people are asleep.
Toxic gases and heat - over 1000°F. - rise and can travel far ahead of the actual flames. When a smoke detector sounds, a person may have less than 2-1/2 minutes to get out. Without a practiced escape plan residents may not make it out.
Elementary school aged children will be bringing materials home containing tips for fire safety and exit plan strategies. Such information is also available at fire stations.
