Clarendon Historical Society
debuts new book by Roy Bubb
Former Clarendon resident Roy Bubb, who is well known in the area as a teacher at SUNY Brockport and as a long time active community supporter and participant, has written a book of his early memories of growing up in Manning Corners. Now part of Clarendon, Manning Corners lies just west of the Clarendon Fire Department on Route 31A.
Bubb's book is entitled "Memories of Manning Corners" and details his years of growing up and going to school in what was then a very rural community. His book is filled with fond remembrances of family and friends who lived in the area during the 1930s and 40s. At the time he lived in Manning, Bubb was a student at the Manning School, which is now the Clarendon Historical Society building. The building was moved to its current location at the corner of Church Street and Route 31A over 10 years ago.
Bubb, in his ongoing support of the Clarendon Historical Society, gave the organization the right to print his book. The cover illustration is a painting of the Manning School by Brockport folk artist Helen Smagorinsky. Color drawings within the book were rendered by Betty Sherwood Genter, a former Manning School pupil.
Members and friends will gather on Sunday, October 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Clarendon Fire Recreation Hall to honor Bubb at a book signing and reception. Copies will be available starting on that day for a cost of $8 per book. All interested persons are invited to attend.
After October 13, book copies are available at the Clarendon Town Hall or through the Clarendon Historical Society.
Funding for this publication was made possible through a grant from the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council and funding from the Orleans County Historical Association.
