Butterflies -
up close and personal
Kamielle Fish, a third-grader in Barb Filardo's class at Holley Elementary School, takes an extra close look at a Monarch butterfly. She was one of the participants in a Project ADEPT (A Diversified Enrichment Program for the Talented) through Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, that gave students the opportunity to learn about the biology and behavior of Monarchs through slides and live specimens. Each class also had its own caterpillar to observe as it molted for the last time and eventually hatched. The butterflies were then tagged and released, so they can begin migration to Mexico, the over-wintering site of the eastern Monarch population.
