Pointon scores two for Rangers
Senior Jamie Pointon scored one goal in each half as the Spencerport Rangers cruised to a 4-2 victory over Brighton in girls soccer September 26.
Just ten minutes in the game, the Rangers took a 1-0 lead. Sally Cappetta took a pass from Jessie Bartock on the right side of the box and was able to put it in the net. Pointon made it 2-0 at the 35 minute mark as she headed in a perfect corner kick. Just two minutes later Cappetta hit a rocket that was tipped over the crossbar and Spencerport took a 2-0 lead in halftime.
Brighton tied the score with two goals in the first six minutes of the second half before the Rangers re-grouped. Samantha Hawn headed in another perfect corner kick from Danielle Bopp - to regain the lead in the 57th minute and Pointon put the game away with her second goal of the game with ten minutes left in the game. Samantha Rhow chipped the ball toward the goal, the Barons' goalkeeper dropped it and Pointon pounced on the loose ball and put it home.
"On corner kicks, I usually look for my teammates in the box and Jamie was there," Bopp commented about the second Ranger goal. "We spent a good hour in practice recently working on corner kicks and it paid off."
Head coach Jessica Stanton said afterward, "This team has had some tough breaks with the school construction and our lights going out earlier this season (caused by a transformer). But the seniors have taken control and it was nice to see a positive result tonight."
Spencerport improved to 4-3-1, 2-2-1 this season with the victory.
