Learn about 19th century
school days at Ogden Farmers' Library
A "lesson" taught by Ogden schoolteacher Sarah Jane "Jennie" McCleery on Tuesday, October 15, 2 p.m. at the Ogden Farmers' Library, will provide a sense of what school was like way back when.
Miss McCleery attended Spencerport High School in the early 1880s and went on to teach in a one-room school house in Ogden after completing her teacher training at the Brockport Normal School. She wrote a series of "School Journals" while in school, later became active in the Women's Temperance Movement and was an early advocate for women's rights. Spencerport resident Wilma Slominski will portray Miss McCleery and will read from some of her writings, including the essay "On Being a Woman."
