Blue Devils rally to beat Saints
Trailing by 20 points after the first five events of the meet, the Brockport Blue Devils girls swimming team rebounded with first place finishes in five of the final seven events to pull out a 95-91 win over Churchville-Chili October 3.
The key to the turnaround was a sweep in the 100-meter freestyle event by Ariana Hill, Rachel Noel and Danielle LaBeau, which closed the Saints lead to eight points. First place finishes included Natalie Smith in the 500-meter freestyle, Merideth Lewis in the 100-meter backstroke and Tessa Snow in the 100-meter butterfly.
The meet was still not decided until the final event - the 400-meter freestyle relay. Brockport finished first, with Smith, Lewis, Hill and Lia Daniels and third to win the points battle. Smith had earlier also finished first in the 200-meter freestyle and Lewis took first in the 200-meter individual medley.
Churchville-Chili took the early lead by winning the 200-meter medley relay with Sarah Monell, Heidi Mance, Angie Schoeneman and Katie Verzi. Monell won the 50-meter freestyle and Sarah Ann Strembenis won the diving competition to extend the lead to 49-29. The Saints Angie Shereman won the 100-meter breaststroke and the team of Shereman, Monell, Verzi and Lisa Fitzsimmons took the 200-meter freestyle relay.
